Freeman Speaker Series presents Jackie Hanselman

Jackie HanselmanEducation Pioneers was established to develop talent to meet existing needs in K-12 education while building the field of leaders to close the talent gap and transform urban education. On Wednesday, Sept. 16, Jackie Hanselman, recruiting manager with the organization, will discuss “The Business of Education.”

The presentation will take place in Goldring/Woldenberg Hall II, Room 1111, from 5-6 p.m.

The Freeman Speaker Series was established to showcase a broad cross-section of business professionals who can speak about their industries, companies and professional activities in a meaningful and intellectual challenging manner. Each lecture is co-sponsored by the Career Management Center and a student organization, and each is followed by a brief reception. Interested faculty, staff and alumni are invited to attend each Freeman Speaker Series event. Business attire is requested.

Ricchiuti in T-P on McMoRan Blackbeard prospect

Peter RicchiutiPeter Ricchiuti is quoted again in today’s Times-Picayune on McMoRan Exploration Co.’s groundbreaking Blackbeard drilling project. The mega-deep well, located just off the mouth of the Mississippi River, could end up producing the equivalent of 4 billion barrels of oil. Ricchiuti says the closely watched project has the potential to be a game changer for the industry.

Ricchiuti is research director of Burkenroad Reports, the Freeman School’s acclaimed equities analysis program.


Analyst recommendations have little effect, researcher says

Robert HansenIn a new paper to be published in Journal of Accounting and Economics, Robert S. Hansen, Francis Martin Chair in Business and professor of finance and economics,  suggests that analysts’ recommendations have little effect on stock prices. The study, co-authored with Oya Altinkiliç of the University of Pittsburgh, found that when an analyst changes a recommendation on a stock, the share price moves on average  just 0.03 percent, far less than had been suggested in previous research.

Peter RicchiutiAssistant Dean Peter Ricchiuti was interviewed by ABC News for a  Good Morning America segment on May 7 that examined the Gulf Coast’s surprisingly strong economy. Ricchiuti is research director of Burkenroad Reports, which follows 38 small- and mid-cap companies across the Southeast.

Cook featured in BusinessWeek

Cook, Freeman Professor of Doctoral Studies and Research and Senior Fellow at the Goldring Institute for International Business, recently contributed an opinion piece to BusinessWeek. The article, titled What GM Can Learn From IBM, suggests that GM can learn much from the example of IBM, which transformed itself from a product-driven company to a services-driven company under the visionary leadership of Louis Gerstner. Students take second place in portfolio competition

Texas Investment Portfolio SymposiumFreeman students Brigham Hall, Jan Roessler, Saurav Srivastav, Dash Yagaan and Jamil Bhatti took second place honors in the Portfolio Manager’s Finalist Competition of the Texas Investment Portfolio Symposium (TIPS), hosted by Rice University’s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management. The competition, which took place on Feb. 21, is open to students involved with student-managed investment portfolios at universities across the Southwest. Freeman students have run the Darwin Fenner Student Managed Fund since 2002, but this was the first time that Freeman participated in the competition. For the competition, each team made a “pitch” to the panel of judges describing their investment philosophy and process.


New GBC officers elected

Chonchol GuptaCongratulations to Chonchol Gupta (MBA ‘10), who was recently elected president of the Graduate Business Council for 2009-2010. Gupta graduated from University of California, Irvine with a BA in international studies and then earned a BS in civil engineering from West Virginia University. Prior to enrolling at the Freeman School, he was a graduate civil engineer with URS Corp. in Houston.

In addition to Chonchol, all of the candidates aligned with Chonchol’s Coalition for a Better Business School were elected as GBC officers, including Stephanie Limberg, vice president of administration; Karthik Mahadevan, vice president of academic affairs; Shalin Patel, vice president of finance; Xinle (Richard) Gu, vice president of international; Long (Vincent) Do, GAPSA senator; Xavier Cabo, GAPSA senator; Ishaneka Williams, competition and conference committee chair; Cesar Solorzano, alumni affairs and career development chair; Shawn-Ann Mullen, community service chair; and Rachel Murray, vice president of social activities.
